Making eye contact – looking directly into someone’s eyes – is in some countries a way to show interest. In other countries, however, eye contact is rude or disrespectful. The gesture for OK, making a circle with one’s thumb and index finger, has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who sees another person making the gesture will think it means money. In France, a person seeing the same gesture will think it means zero. In Brazil and Germany, however, the gesture is rude. The thumbs – up gesture, meaning “great” or “good job” in the US, is rude in Nigeria, but in Germany and Japan it means the number one. The “crazy” gesture, moving the index finger in a circle in front of the ear, means “you have a phone call” in Brazil.

A theme park is a collection of rides, exhibitions or other attractions that are based on a common theme. Unlike traditional amusement parks, theme parks often want to teach visitors something. At the World Park, one of the largest theme parks in China, visitors can look at buildings, castles and statues from more than thirty countries. At the China Ethnic Culture Park, people can learn about the customs, costumes, and culture of China’s fifty – five minorities. There are also theme parks about cartoon characters, animals—even about water. What they all have in common is that they combine fun with the opportunity to learn something.

III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) If we want to be healthy, we should make good choices about what we eat. It is not necessary to become a vegetarian or a vegan, but we must make sure that our diet is varied and balanced. A healthy diet should give us the calories we need but not contain too much fat and sugar. The number of calories our body needs depends on what our body type is, how much we weigh and how active we are. Teenagers need about 2,500 calories a day. Girls usually need a bit less and people who play sports may need more. Getting the calories we need is not enough. If we want to be healthy, we must make sure that we get the calories in the best way possible. The best source for calories is carbohydrates, which are found in grains, vegetables and fruit. Our bodies store carbohydrates in our muscles so that we can get energy when we need it.

An elephant can smell how another elephant is feeling and even tell if it is sick. The elephant’s nose, or trunk, is also used to make noises and to greet other elephants. Different noises have a variety of meanings: they can mean “I am hungry”, “I am angry”, or “Good to see you!” An elephant’s body language includes ear signals and gestures. If an elephant spreads its ears, it means “Watch out!” To show friendship, elephants will touch each other with their trunks and stand close to each other, putting their foreheads together.

Knowing them will help you make a good impression. Having good table manners means knowing, for example, how to use knives and forks when to drink a toast and how to behave at the table ,Beside your napkin you will find a small bread roll and three glasses —one for white wine ,one foe red wine, and one for water. There are two pairs of knives and forks on the table, forks on the left and knives on the right of the plate .when you see two spoons, the big one is for the soup and the small one for the dessert .the knife and fork that are closet to your plate are little bit bigger than the ones beside them. When you sit down at the table, you can take your napkin, unfold it and put it on your lap. In China, you sometimes get a hot, damp cloth to clean your face and hands, which, however, is not the custom in Western countries. IV. Answer the following questions according to the passage above. Pieces of the palaces that had been hidden before the Nazis came could now be used to rebuild the city and its culture. It was not easy. Painters and workers had to be very careful when they were trying to bring the city back to life It was difficult to save the palaces and buildings without destroying their old beauty. With the help of old paintings and photographs, the people of St Petersburg were able to bring back the beauty of their culture and history. Now, after years of hard work, parts of statues have been put back together and missing pieces have been replaced. Old paintings, including a portrait of Peter the Great which was found in the snow outside St Petersburg, have been carefully recreated and the old palaces have been made as wonderful as in the past. The ancient Olympic Games began around the year 776BC in Greece. Many of the sports were the same as they are now. Some of the games in which the young men competed were: running, jumping and wrestling. Women were not allowed to take part in the games. After about the year 393 AD the Olympic Games stopped. For centuries there were no Olympic Games. But they were not forgotten. The first Olympic Games in modern times happened in 1896. They were held in Greece—the country in which the Games were born. In the Games there were 311 competitors from just 13countries. After that more and more countries joined in the Games. In 2000, over 10,000athletes from nearly 200countries went to Sydney, Australia, for the 27th Olympic Games! There are 300 different events in the Games. Horse-riding, hammer throw and shooting are some of the more unusual events.

Harry has to fight against bad wizards and do the right thing. Together with his friends, Harry learns that it is not always easy to do what is right. You must believe in what you do and who you are if you want to succeed in the world—the magical world of Hogwarts and the real one. Where someone is born and what a person looks like is not as important as what he or she grows up to be. Two people may speak different languages, have different habits or even come from two different worlds, but they can still be friends if they share the same goals, hopes and dreams. It is not enough to be strong in heart and mind; we must also believe in ourselves and help others if we want to be happy and live a good life.

Now, scientists believe that we might be able to send things from one place to another without actually moving them through space. This sounds strange, but a new way of transportation may become possible in the future. Teleportation is a combination of sending information through telephones or the Internet and transportation. Teleportation is different from normal transportation. With normal transportation, for example by car or plane, a person or thing is moved from point A to point B. With teleportation, a person or thing is taken apart at point A and put together again at point B. If teleportation becomes possible, we may be able to travel faster and farther than we could ever imagine.

III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) Instead of giving up, Hawking went on with his research, got his PhD and married Jane. Nor did he let the disease stop him from living the kind of life he had always dreamt of. He continued his exploration of the universe and traveled around the world to give lectures. In 2002, Hawking visited China and spoke to university students in Hangzhou and Beijing. As his disease has disabled him, Hawking has to sit in his now-famous wheelchair and speak through a computer. He told the students about his theories and thoughts on some of the greatest questions: what is time, how did the universe begin, and what exactly are black holes? Hawking became famous in the early 1970s, when he and American Roger Penrose made new discoveries about the Big Bang and black holes. Since then, Hawking has continued to seek answers to questions about the nature of the universe. In 1988, he wrote A Brief History of Time, which quickly became a best-seller. Readers were pleased and surprised to find that a scientist could write about his work in a way that ordinary people could understand. IV. III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) Architecture looks at the man-made living environment. Every great culture in the past had its own ideas of beauty expressed in art ad architecture. When you look around at buildings, streets, squares and parks, you will find them designed, planned and built in different styles. Modernism was invented in the 1920s by a group of architects who wanted to change society with buildings that went against people’s feeling of beauty. They wanted their buildings constructed in a way to look unnatural. While in traditional architecture materials such as earth, stone, brick and wood are used, the materials of modern architecture are steel, glass and concrete. To many people modern architecture equals progress. Developing countries want to build the most modern-looking buildings as the first step towards becoming a modern country. Modern buildings impress us because they are huge, but many people do not find them beautiful. The buildings look like boxes with flat roofs, sharp corners and glass walls that act as mirrors. You do not feel invited to enter them. Everything about these buildings seems hard and unfriendly. IV. Answer the following questions according to the passage above. (15%, 5 points for each) V. III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) The idea that England stands for Fish & Chips, Speakers’ Corner, Big Ben and the Tower of London is past. Though many people around the world study its language, their view of British culture is sometimes narrow. The fact that Great Britain is made up of three countries is still unknown to many. Within Great Britain for many years now, there has been a growing movement to make most of its cultural diversity—to see it as it really is: a nation of different countries held together by a common language and culture. The British Isles are a group of islands that lies off the west coast of Europe. The largest island is called Britain, which is separated from France by the English Channel, which at one point is only 20 miles wide. It forms the mainland of Great Britain and consists of three countries: Scotland in the north, Wales in the west and England in the south and east. The island just west of Britain is called Ireland. Between Britain and Ireland, in the Irish Sea, lies the small Isle of Man. The British Isles are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the North Sea to the east. IV. III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) AIDS is a disease that breaks down the body’s immune system and leaves a person defenseless against infections and illnesses. Most people who have AIDS manage to survive only a few years after they get the disease. For some, medicine can help keep them alive, but the treatment is expensive and does not cure them. People get AIDS after having been infected with HIV. HIV spreads through blood and other body liquids. People transmit HIV by having unprotected sex, by receiving infected blood transfusions or, as in Xiaohua’s case, through birth. Xiaohua’s mother contracted HIV when she was 28, and she died of AIDS only three years after Xiaohua was born. Xiaohua’s mother did not know that she had AIDS until Xiaohua was born. Xiaohua’s father, who also has AIDS, takes care of her, but Xiaohua misses her mother. “I wish I could remember more about my mum,” Xiaohua says, “I wish that she were here with me and that we weren’t sick.” IV. III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) The most important thing to keep in mind when dealing with an emergency is to stay calm. If we were to panic, we would not be abele to help. By staying calm we will be able to think what to do and make better decisions. We can also prepare for an emergency by learning more about first aid. Calling an ambulance or the police is important, but there is more we can and should do. If we know how to respond, we can save lives. Many hospitals recommend that we use the letters DR ABC to remember what to do when we have to think fast. D stands for danger. We should first of all make sure that the accident scene is no longer dangerous. If we were to get hurt trying to save someone, we would not be able to help. R is for response. We can do a lot of good by simply asking “Are you all right?” if the person can answer, we know that he or she is conscious and can breathe. The question will also calm the person, letting him or her know that help is on the way.

III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) In 1972, the United Nations held a meeting in Stockholm, Sweden to share ideas about ways to take better care of the earth. At the Stockholm summit, representatives from more than one hundred countries discussed some of the most important problems facing out planet. Since then, several Earth Summits have been held and much progress has been made. In 2002, the Earth Summit was held in Johannesburg in South Africa. One of the main themes of the summit was “sustainable development”, or the question how we can continue developing the world without damaging the environment. In Johannesburg, experts from all over the world spoke about different topics and discussed new ways to solve old problems. Most of the speakers talked about the “big three”, the three biggest killers in the world—contaminated drinking water, poor sanitation and air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, the big three cause more than seven million deaths every year. That is 15% of all the deaths in the world. 20% of the people on earth do not have access to clean drinking water. Air pollution alone causes almost three million deaths. Most of these deaths happen in rural areas, where people burn wood and coal to cook food and stay warm. Air pollution is also a big problem in very large cities, especially in developing countries. III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) Whatever great achievements the future may have in store for China, it is likely that many of them will be born in northwestern Beijing. Zhongguancun, in Beijing’s Haidian District, is the new centre for Chinese science and technology. It is home to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and more than ten famous universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University. Zhongguancun was set up as special economic zone in the late 1990s and quickly became the leader of China’s hi-tech industry. The science centre got started in the early 1980s, when Chen Chunxian, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, opened a private research and development institute. Within the next ten years, more than a hundred scientific and hi-tech companies moved into the area and new hi-tech centers developed around the original Zhongguancun Garden. They all have their own characteristics, but they all share the spirit of creativity and scientific skill that have made Zhongguancun a success.

Jules Verne was born in 1828, in France. His father sent him to Paris to study law, but instead Verne developed his love for the theatre. To make a living, Verne had to write and sell stories. He spent many hours in Paris libraries studying botany, applied science and many other subjects. He used the latest ideas and technical inventions of his day in his books. Many of the instruments in his novels will remind the reader of Dr Benjamin Franklin’s experiments with electricity. By taking the scientific development of his day one step further, Jules Verne laid the foundation of modern science fiction. He also suggested how inventions could be used in the future to allow man to do things that were considered impossible in his own time. Jules Verne died in 1905, long before any of his dreams came true. IV. Answer the following questions according to the passage above. (15%, 5 points for each)

III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) Earth is an ocean planet. About three billion years ago, life on our planet began in the deep blue seas. Ninety-nine percent of the living space in earth is in the oceans. Marine life is incredibly rich and varied. There are about five million species in the oceans and we have yet to learn much about them. Life in the oceans ranges form the tiniest plankton all the way up to giants like sharks and whales. What makes the ocean such a great place to live? The answer is water. CHEMICAL STUCTURE The chemical structure of water makes it an excellent medium for life. Water is actually quite simple, but the way the water molecule is formed gives water its unique properties. The water molecule is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. They form a polar molecule, that is, one with a slightly positive end and a slightly negative end. Because water is polar, it can break down both solids and gases. The nutrients in whatever falls into the ocean quickly become available to other living creatures. The chemical structure of water also makes it different from almost everything else on earth. Water is a liquid at room temperature and has a relatively high freezing point.

III. Read aloud the following passage smoothly and distinctly. (30%) Ever since the Civil War, the south has struggled to find ways to deal with its trouble past. The history of the South is one of suffering: the suffering of the Native Americans who were killed or driven off their land by European settlers; the pains of slaves brought from Africa by greedy slave traders, the death and poverty of the Civil War; the hardships of unemployment and civil unrest in the post-war years and the Great Depression; the many sacrifices of the Civil Rights movement. The wounds are slow to heal and the scars run deep. Even today, the south is far behind the rest of the United States in areas such as education and economic development. But the story of the South is also one of hope and success. There are sighs that a new, different South is coming out of its dark past. Atlanta, Georgia, is a good example. Like many of its sister cities in the South, Atlanta was burnt down in the Civil War. The city was destroyed and there was no money for reconstruction. In fact, when the new mayor of Atlanta started working in 1864, the city had only $1.64. The post-war years were hard and the people of Atlanta struggled to rebuild the city and create a new South where former slaves and slave-owners could live together.
