(D) The kiss of Death Some years ago, during an election campaign (运动) in a large American city , one of the candidates (候选人) was having a hard time. Just when he needed all the support, a well known woman announced her support for him. This made things even worse. His followers described the woman’s act as “kiss of death”. The reason was that the woman was not respected. It was known to many that her riches had come from very questionable business and dealings. Her support for the candidate could do more harm than good. So it was a “ kiss of death”. Where did this phrase come from? The origin can be found in historical accounts in the Bible . According to a well-known story, Jesus was given away to the enemy by one of his followers, Judas. The act of the giving –away was a kiss. On the surface it appeared to be a show of deep love, but by doing so, Judas helped the enemy, who had been looking for Jesus, recognize him easily. Jesus was later nailed to a wooden cross and put to death. In present day usage, an act of pretended love that is really intended to do harm is often called a “kiss of death” or a “ Judas kiss”. Sometimes the love or show of support may be real, not pretended, but if the person doing the act has a bad reputation (名声) or is strongly disliked, that act might also be regarded as a “ kiss of death”. The example shows how events from early Christian (基督教) history have found their way into English language. Among different religious (宗教的) beliefs, the Christian influence has been the strongest on the minds and thinking of English-speaking people. It is natural that English speakers and writers often mention well-known characters and events from the Christian tradition. 7.Who are considered as giving a “ kiss of death”? A.Those who are extremely rich. B.Those who pretend to give support. C.Those whose support is expected to bring harm to the people being supported. D. Those whose support is disliked and considered useless to the people being support. 8.Why were things worse in the election campaign when the rich woman gave her support to the candidate? A.Because women’s support was often disliked by most of the citizen. B.Because the woman’ s wealth was known to have come from wrong ways. C. Because it was not the right time for the candidate to accept her support. D.Because the act of support given by the woman was not sincere. 9.What is the true meaning of the “kiss of death”? A.The pretended love which bring bad luck on the one being loved. B.The love which somebody gives by a pretended kiss. C. A kiss that brings real death the person being kissed. D.A kiss that shows deep love for the person being kissed. 10.From the last paragraph, what can we conclude about the events in the early Christian history? A.They are handed down from generation to generation. B.Most writers of English and speakers are Christian believers. C.Many English words expressions are based on them. D.They have been greatly affected by the English language. ( E ) Use the information in the box and your knowledge of U.S. history to answer the following question.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been looking at ways to make the world’s largest sporting event a bit smaller and easier for cities to host. Mexico is the only Latin American nation to have hosted the Olympics. And the Games have never been held in Africa. It costs well over US$4 billion to host the Olympic Games. And this is stopping many poorer countries from trying to win the bid. Cities in Africa and Latin America, with great social and money problems, cannot even begin to make a bid. But it’s the Olympics that suffer because they lose their global appeal. So, the IOC has suggested 117 ways to make the Games smaller and easier for cities across the world. These ideas are to be put into practice soon—maybe in time for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The IOC wants to save up to US$ 400 million. The suggestions include limiting the number of sports to 28 and the number of athletes to 10,500. “ Imagine a bus with 28 seats and some sports need to get off to give their places to other sports,” said an IOC official. Sports that might not appear in the 2008 Beijing Games include baseball, softball and the modern pentathlon (五项全能) ( shooting, fencing, horse jumping, swimming and running). “ We think that Olympic Games have to be made smaller, and less costly so that they can be organized by all continents and subcontinents. “ Said IOC president Jacques Rogge. “ Our dream is that a continent such as Africa will be able to organize the Olympic Games.” 18.The purpose of writing the article is to ______. Now, a few American high schools are opening these centers. For example, a high school in the state of Maryland began operating a Cyber Cafe last March. All students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda can use the Cyber Cafe. But school officials say it especially helps students who have no computer or cannot use the Internet at home. The officials say thirteen percent of the students at the school are from poor families. Many students have arrived in the United States from other countries only recently. Students in the school's program for learning English speak twenty-three other languages. The idea for a Cyber Cafe at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School began three years ago. At that time, officials were planning to restore the school building. Parents interested in technology proposed a Cyber Café. They wanted this center even though schools in the area had suffered budget (预算) cuts. The community wanted to help. It wanted all students to have the best chances to learn. Officials in the area supported the idea. So did an organization called the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Educational Foundation. The foundation includes parents, teachers, former students, and business, community and other leaders. Over two years, the foundation collected money for a Cyber Cafe and other new computers. It received more than one hundred seventy thousand dollars. The Cafe now has sixteen computers, a printer and a device called a scanner ( 扫描仪) . School official Ann Hengerer (HEN-grr-er) says students used the Internet to complete research. They also write homework and required papers on the computers. In addition, they can send and receive electronic mails. That is especially helpful for the many students who have family members in other nations. The Cyber Cafe also serves a social purpose. Visitors can stop by for a drink of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. On Long Island, in New York, the Walter G. “0”Connell Copiague (Co-PAYG) High School has six computers in its Cyber Cafe. was named after a baby chimp in the London Zoo, and seemed to foretell the course Jane’s life would take. To this day, Jubilee sits in a chair in Jane’s London home. From an early age, Jane was attracted by animals and animal stories. By the age of 10, she was talking about going to Africa to live among the animals there. At the time, in the early 1940s, this was a radical idea because women did not go to Africa by themselves. As a young woman, Jane finished school in London, attended secretarial school, and then worked for a documentary filmmaker for a while. When a school friend invited her to visit Kenya, she worked as a waitress until she had earned the fare to travel there by boat. She was 23 years old. Once in Kenya, she met Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous paleontologist (考古学家) and anthropologist. He was impressed with her thorough knowledge of Africa and its wildlife, and hired her to assist him and his wife on a fossil-hunting expedition to Olduvai Gorge. Dr. Leakey soon realized that Jane was the perfect person to complete a study he had been planning for some time. She expressed her interest in the idea of studying animals by living in the wild with them, rather than studying dead animals through paleontology. Dr. Leakey and Jane began planning a study of a group of chimpanzees who were living on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Kenya. At first, the British authorities would not agree to their plan. At the time, they thought it was too dangerous for a woman to live in the wilds of Africa alone. But Jane’s mother, Vanne, agreed to join her so that she would not be alone. Finally, the authorities gave Jane the clearance she needed in order to go to Africa and begin her study In July of 1960, Jane and her mother arrived at Gombe National Park in what was then called Tanganyika and is now called Tanzania. Jane faced many challenges as she began her work. The chimpanzees did not accept her right away, and it took months for them to get used to her presence in their territory. But she was very patient and remained focused on her goal. Little by little, she was able to enter their world. At first, she was able to watch the chimpanzees only from a great distance, using binoculars. As time passed, she was able to move her observation point closer to them while still using camouflage (保护色). Eventually, she was able to sit among them, touching, patting, and even feeding them. It was an amazing accomplishment (完成) for Jane, and a breakthrough in the study of animals in the wild. Jane named all of the chimpanzees that she studied, stating in her journals that she felt they each had a unique personality. One of the first significant observations that Jane made during the study was that chimpanzees make and use tools, much like humans do, to help them get food. It was previously thought that humans alone used tools. Also thanks to Jane’s research, we now know that chimps eat meat as well as plants and fruits. In many ways, she has helped us to see how chimpanzees and humans are similar. In doing so, she has made us more sympathetic (同情)toward these creatures, while helping us to better understand ourselves. The study started by Jane Goodall in 1960 is now the longest field study of any animal species in their natural habitat. Research continues to this day in Gombe and is conducted by a team of trained Tanzanians. Jane’s life has included much more than just her study of the chimps in Tanzania. She pursued a graduate degree while still conducting her study, receiving her Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1965. In 1984, she received the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize for "helping millions of people understand the importance of wildlife conservation to life on this planet." She has been married twice: first to a photographer and then to the director of National Parks. She has one son. Dr. Jane Goodall is now the world’s most renowned authority on chimpanzees, having studied their behavior for nearly 40 years. She has published many scientific articles, has written two books, and has won numerous awards for her groundbreaking work. The Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education, and Conservation was founded in 1977 in California but moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1998. Its goal is to take the actions necessary to improve the environment for all living things. Dr. Goodall now travels extensively, giving lectures, visiting zoos and chimp sanctuaries (保护区), and talking to young people involved in environmental education. She is truly a great conservationist and an amazing human being. 36.In the sentence “But she was very patient and remained focused on her goal”, What does the word “focused “ mean?A.bothered B.tired C.disinterested D.concerned 37.What is the author’s purpose in writing this article? (R) The Internet is not, as some people believe, a huge computer that stores a lot of information. The Internet is a linking of many computers-perhaps as many as several million-by the use of telephone lines in such a way that somebody sitting at a computer in Norway is able to get information from another computer in, say, Japan. The Internet was started by the United States military as a communication system that would survive (幸免于) a nuclear war. Before long, government departments and universities realized how useful it was and began to use it. In this way they were able to make information-in words, pictures and sound-available (可获得的) to whoever needed it. The Internet was developed in the 1970s, but it was not until the 1990s that ordinary people began to use it. This growth was because of a number of factors (因素), the most important of which was the increase in the electronic device that enables a computer to send and receive information through a telephone line. As soon as ordinary people began to use the Internet, businesses realized this was an excellent way of advertising their products and even selling them. It is now possible to order books, magazines, CDs, videos and many other things from electronic sites. Most airlines and large hotels will accept reservations (预定) through the Internet. Most of the information on the Internet is free as people who have special interests create their own sites-called web pages-and like other people to read what they have to say. However, other information must be paid for. If you want to get an article from a magazine, for example, you either have to pay subscriptions (订阅) and receive a password which allows you to enter the site or pay for each article individually. Either way, you can download or copy the article or articles to your own computer. Anyone who knows how to put information on the Internet and you can even have a conversation with someone on the other side of the world if you want to. Although much of the information on the Internet is free, using the Internet itself is not. Firstly, there is the cost of a telephone call to an Internet service provider. This is an organization that links individual computers to the Internet. Secondly, there is a charge made by this provider, which is either an hourly rate or a monthly subscription.

Short term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, our long term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short term. Upon completing our short term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long term goal to limit us or our course of action. 48. Long term goals mean a lot ___________.
